Wednesday 29th July

Today I made a late morning visit under a slightly overcast sky and there was a cool breeze blowing from a south-easterly direction. Not many birds were seen, mainly due to the time of the year and the time of the day. Young Green Woodpeckers were very active, a young Little Owl in an Oak on the edge of the Oak wood, a Linnet was singing from the scrub area close to the Inlet, 5 Treecreepers were heard, 2 Nuthatch called, and several Goldfinch were noted.

The RSPCA were in a boat on the Lake armed with nets. I didn't get a chance to ask them what they were looking for, but they appeared to be searching around the Terrapin 'hotspots'. The disturbance on the Lake meant that there was fewer bird species than there perhaps would have been. Birds of particular note on the Lake were 6 Great Crested Grebes, a female Tufted Duck and 4 Mute Swans. A Lesser Black-backed Gull was seen flying over, and 3 Reed Warblers were heard singing from the pockets of reedbed around the Lake.

Painted Lady

Speckled Woods, Painted Ladies, Peacocks, Meadow Browns, Gatekeepers, and Small Whites were the most numerous butterflies seen today, and singles of Comma, Small Skipper and Common Blue were also picked up. A Migrant Hawker dragonfly was spotted by the Oaks around the main car park.
