Tuesday 19th May

A very pleasant mid-morning walk was enjoyed today with lots of sunshine and a few scattered cloud was in the sky.

7 Blackcaps were heard singing, 5 Goldcrests were noted, 4 Chiff Chaffs were singing, 13 Whitethroat were seen around the grassland areas, a Great Spotted Woodpecker called from the Old Bothy, 2 Stock Doves were heard, a Treecreeper was seen in the Oak wood by the School Lane entrance, a Garden Warbler was singing from an Oak in the same wood, 5 Swifts were seen, 2 Linnets were spotted in the old cattle area (largest area of rough grassland), a Willow Warbler could be heard singing from an Oak by the Pitch & Putt, a family of Long-tailed Tits were seen along the Causeway, and 2 Nuthatch were noted. Bird of the day was a Lesser Whitethroat - new for the list this year - which was seen and heard singing in the hawthorn hedge north of the large Horse Chestnuts on the Lake’s eastern edge.


Great Crested Grebe

At least 7 Reed Warblers were singing from various parts around the Lake and marsh area, and of particular note on the Lake were 6 Great Crested Grebes, 4 Mute Swans, and 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull. At least 14 Black-headed Gulls were down by the feeding area on the Lake.

Butterflies recorded were 3 Small Whites, 1 Peacock, and 1 Common Blue, and a Slowworm was seen in the grassland north of the River Len between the 2 bridges.
