Saturday 16th May

It was very blowy during my walk in the Park this morning. It was nice to have some regular sunny spells shining through an otherwise overcast sky.

Creeping Buttercup

10 Blackcaps were heard singing, 4 Goldcrests were heard, 9 Chiff Chaffs were noted, 2 Nuthatch were seen, 3 Great Spotted Woodpeckers were heard calling, at least 13 Whitethroats were singing, a Coal Tit called from an Alder between the 2 bridges along the Len, 2 parties of Long-tailed Tits were observed, 4 Swift were hunting insects above the trees along the River Len, 2 Treecreeper were seen, a Green Woodpecker called from the old Beech on Jenner’s Bank, 4 House Martin and a Swallow were hunting insects over the Old Cattle Area (large area of rough grassland), a Willow Warbler was singing from the area of scrub opposite the Inlet, the first Spotted Flycatcher of the year was catching insects from an Oak in the west end of the Oak wood next to the School Lane car park, and 2 Garden Warblers could be heard singing – 1 from the same Oak as the Spotted Flycatcher was seen in and the other was singing from the scrub area opposite the Inlet.

At least 7 Reed Warblers were singing from various parts around the Lake and marsh area, a Cormorant was fishing amongst the spawning carp in the marsh area, and of particular note on the Lake were 7 Great Crested Grebes, 4 Mute Swans, and 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls.

Mallard Duckling

Also seen were 4 Speckled Wood and 1 Green Veined White, a Red-eared Terrapin could be seen in its usual spot, a Weasel was seen briefly as it scampered across my path in the grassland north of the Len, and a female Banded Demoiselle was blown across my path along the Lake’s eastern edge.

Hi Simon.
Like Warren. You finally got a Flycatcher. You also saw a nice lot of birds, some good species there. Well done.
I too had my 1st Banded Demoiselle today.
