Saturday 31st January

It was a beautiful sunny day today – very spring-like. The resident Chaffinches are now proclaiming their territories.

Snowdrop

2 Nuthatch were heard calling, 5 Goldcrests were noted, a Green Woodpecker was seen in the large Ash in the grassland up from the Len, a Great Spotted Woodpecker called from an Alder along the Len, a female Kestrel was hunting in the grassland up from the Len, 2 Stock Dove were seen in an Alder along the Len, and 5 Redwing were seen in the trees in the area of grass in front of Mote House.

Along the River Len at least 13 Siskins and 5 Goldfinch were feeding in the Alders, 2 Little Grebes were noted, a drake Teal was seen by the 2 Horse Chestnuts, a Grey Wagtail was feeding by the carriage bridge, and a Grey Heron was seen standing opposite the large Oak.

Grey Wagtail

At the feeding area on the Lake were 14 Canada Geese, 2 Mute Swans, and the various Mallards and hybrid ducks. On the main area of the Lake and by the boating ramps were 12 Pochards, 11 Tufted Duck, 1 Canada Goose, and a Great Crested Grebes. The gull flock on the Lake produced at least 65 Black-headed Gulls and 13 Common Gulls.

2 dog Foxes were noted. 1 'barked' from the wood next to the Walled Garden and another was seen laying in the Sun in the grassland up from the Len. It was reported to me during the week that there has been 2 Little Egrets in the Park.
