A wet and blustery day greeted me this morning, but despite the poor conditions, I went ahead and walked my usual route.
6 Goldcrests were noted, 6 Redwing, 1 Pied Wagtail, and 1 Skylark flew west, a Nuthatch called briefly from the Oaks by Mote Cottages, at least 16 Siskin were counted in the Alders by the bridge along the River Len, a Grey Wagtail was perched on the wall of the bridge as I approached, a group of Long-tailed Tit were seen passing through the willows and alders along the causeway by the Weir, a Great Spotted Woodpecker called from an Oak, a Pheasant was heard calling from the area of scrub opposite the Inlet, and 2 Treecreeper were spotted amongst a mixed feeding flock in the hawthorn hedge at the top of the causeway.
On the Lake were Mallards, Coots, Moorhens, a male Tufted Duck, 11 Great Crested Grebes, 2 Mute Swan, a flock of 27 Canada Geese, 4 Pochard – the first of the winter – and a group of at least 13 Cormorants. The gull flock on the Lake included at least 86 Black-headed Gulls, 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 14 Common Gulls, and a very smart adult winter-plumaged Mediterranean Gull.
Hi, my name is Simon. My local patch is Mote Park, one of Kent’s largest parks and right on the edge of Maidstone, the county town of Kent. well done for getting out today Simon. I don't know about you, but I always think once your out in the weather, it isn't as bad as you think its going to be.
