It was grey and overcast during my morning visit today.
6 Goldcrests were seen, 4 Bullfinch were found, a Stock Dove flew off east out of the old Horse Chestnuts on the Lakes eastern edge – the first seen for quite a while – 2 Treecreeper was heard singing, 4 Nuthatch were calling along the River Len, 4 Great Spotted Woodpecker were seen, 2 Green Woodpecker were seen, a dozen or so Siskin were in the Alders along the Len, 4 Redwing were seen, a female Sparrowhawk flew from the Yews by Mote House being persued by a crow, 2 Coal Tits were spotted amongst a mixed feeding flock by the old carriage bridge, 4 Jay were seen, and 2 Pheasants called – 1 in the wood at the foot of Jenner’s Bank and 1 from the marsh area along the River Len. Also noted was a pair of Collared Doves – the first to return after the annual autumn and winter break!

A Water Rail was present with 2 Moorhen in the Pond opposite the Waterfall, 5 Grey Herons were seen along the Len, and 5 Cormorants were on the island next to the Weir Bridge.

Wildfowl were back to good numbers with 14 Pochard, 9 Tufted Duck, and 2 Mute Swan being of particular note. A Lesser Black-backed Gull (number 61 for the year) was spotted standing on a buoy in the centre of the Lake and the gull flock consisted of at least 65 Black-headed Gulls and 7 Common Gulls.
