Saturday 18th April

It was a beautiful sunny day today. This morning was spent helping lead a walk around the Park for the Kent Wildlife Trust. In the afternoon I met a friend in the Park to take some butterfly a flower shots with a new macro lens I have recently purchased.

Wild Garlic

7 Blackcaps were heard singing, 14 House Martins and 3 Swallows were hunting insects over the Lake – the first of the year – 8 Chiff Chaff were heard, 8 Goldcrests were noted, 3 Willow Warblers were singing, 5 Whitethroats can now be seen, 5 Green Woodpeckers were noted, a Great Spotted Woodpecker was heard drumming, a Reed Warbler was singing in the marsh area, 2 Jays were seen, a Pheasant called from the wet wood along the bottom of Jenner’s Bank, 2 Treecreeper was heard singing between the 2 bridges over the Len, and 3 Linnets were seen in the Old Cattle Area (large area of rough grassland up the bank from the Len). A Kingfisher and 1 Grey Heron were seen along the Len.

Birds of particular note on the Lake were 6 Great Crested Grebes, 8 Canada Geese, and 2 Mute Swan. The gull flock on the Lake held at least 54 Black-headed Gulls and 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls.

Slowworm

2 Red-eared Terrapins were sunning themselves on the Lake’s eastern edge, 4 Slowworm were seen, 1 Rabbit was seen, Wild Garlic is now in flower in the Len Valley, and butterfly species seen were 1 Green-veined White, 16 Orange Tips, 7 Peacocks, 1 Red Admiral, 4 Commas, 4 Small Whites, 2 Holly Blues, and 5 Speckled Wood butterflies.
