Friday 27th March

It was cloudy with some sunny spells during a mid-morning visit today.


Green Woodpecker

3 Nuthatch were noted, 8 Goldcrest were seen, 2 Treecreeper were heard singing, 4 Chiff Chaff could be heard, 6 Green Woodpeckers were seen, a Stock Dove was noted, a Great Spotted Woodpecker was called from the marsh area, a Kestrel was seen on Jenner’s Bank, 2 Siskin called as they flew east and a 3 Grey Herons were seen along the River Len.



Grey Heron

Birds of particular note on the Lake were 4 Great Crested Grebes, 7 Canada Geese, and 2 Mute Swans. The gull flock contained at least 58 Black-headed Gulls, 11 Common Gulls, and 4 Mediterranean Gulls.

Several Bumblebees and 3 Bee Flies were seen, and Toothwort is now in flower under some of the old coppiced Hazel.

What fantastic pics! Med Gulls in summer-plummage? Any near the feeding area? Saw Josh got some Crossbill at Tudeley today as well.

Any idea who that Grey Heron is trying to swallow ?
Been looking , but no sign of Toothwort around here yet .

Hi Simon.
You got yourself a couple of good pictures there. You caught the Heron just right, and the Woodpecker,(female by the looks of it) with the light on its back. It shows off it's colouration nicely.

Adam - The Med Gulls are in summer plumage, they tend to gather in the main open area opposite the old boating ramps. They visit the playing fields too, mainly the top 1.

Greenie - I think the Heron was trying to swallow a Chub, can't be sure though!
