Friday 20th March

Apologies for the lack of posting lately – I have been away in North Wales. Today was a beautiful spring day with plenty of things to see.

4 Green Woodpeckers were heard, 6 Goldcrests were noted, a Treecreeper was heard singing along the Len, 3 Chiff Chaffs were singing, 6 Nuthatch were noted, 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers were seen, a Stock Dove was heard, 1 Jay was seen, and 2 Siskin flew west. A Grey Heron and a Kingfisher were seen along the River Len, and 2 Grey Wagtails were in the Pond.

Nuthatch

Birds of particular note on the Lake were 6 Great Crested Grebes, 6 Canada Geese, 2 Mute Swans, and 1 Cormorant.

The gull flock contained at least 57 Black-headed Gulls, at least 15 Common Gulls, at least 2 Mediterranean Gulls, and 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Coltsfoot

Also noted were thousands of fry in the River Len, lots of Buff-tailed Bumblebees, 4 Bee Flies, and 1 Red Admiral.

Simon ,
Same here with the Bee Flies and some enormous Bumble Bees .
Would be interesting to know if the Red Admiral was a migrant or an over-wintering one , as some do now .

Hi Simon.
Hope you had a nice time in Wales, and saw lots of wildlife. You did pretty well on your first day back.
